About the site

The Clinical Research Support Center (CWBK) of the Wojskowy Instytut Medyczny – Państwowy Instytut Badawczy is a modern unit providing comprehensive support for the conduct of commercial and non‑commercial clinical trials. Operating within the framework of one of the largest and most experienced clinical hospitals in Poland, we combine the potential of a multi‑specialty medical center with the highest quality standards and state‑of‑the‑art organizational and research infrastructure.

WIM–PIB is a multi‑profile, highly specialized clinical hospital with the highest level of referral capacity, equipped with modern diagnostic, laboratory, and therapeutic infrastructure. The Institute provides access to a full suite of resources necessary for conducting clinical trials, including, among others, imaging diagnostics, diagnostic laboratories, histopathology, nuclear medicine, endoscopy suites, as well as numerous wards and specialist outpatient clinics. Such extensive capabilities enable the execution of research projects in virtually all major areas of contemporary medicine.

CWBK provides comprehensive study support at every stage of execution. Sponsors, investigators, and patients have access to dedicated infrastructure, including, among others, monitored hospital wards, infusion rooms, physician offices, procedure rooms with phlebotomy points, and facilities for processing and storing biological material (with continuous parameter monitoring). The CWBK team consists of experienced professionals handling clinical trial coordination, contracting, data management, quality monitoring, and administrative support. CWBK also employs its own medical staff (physicians, nursing personnel) responsible for implementing clinical trial procedures and providing medical care during the patient’s stay at the center.

One of the cornerstones of CWBK’s operations is its quality management system. In the clinical research domain, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been implemented, and quality specialists oversee compliance of studies with applicable laws, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, and internal procedures. CWBK’s quality system is integrated with the hospital quality management system operating within WIM–PIB, allowing research processes to benefit from organizational solutions developed in an accredited, highly specialized clinical hospital. This approach provides sponsors, investigators, and study participants with the highest level of safety, process transparency, and compliance with regulatory requirements and international standards.

WIM–PIB has been conducting clinical trials for many years across a broad spectrum of medical fields. The Institute’s experience encompasses both commercial and non‑commercial studies of medicinal products and medical devices. The multidisciplinary nature of WIM–PIB enables effective execution of trials in numerous therapeutic areas while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and ethics.

Main research areas of the site

Respiratory and Interstitial Lung Disease Research

At Wojskowy Instytut Medyczny Panstwowy Instytut Badawczy in Warsaw, clinical research in respiratory tract diseases focuses on serious lung conditions such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease. These studies are designed to evaluate new treatment options and better understand their impact on lung function and symptom control.

  • Testing potential therapies for progressive lung fibrosis and related breathing problems
  • Studying treatment effects in systemic sclerosis with lung involvement
  • Assessing whether new approaches can slow decline in lung function

This area reflects a strong interest in improving care for patients with chronic and often hard-to-treat pulmonary disease.

Oncology and Hematology Trials

The site also carries out extensive research in neoplasms, including acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, breast cancer, advanced non-small cell lung cancer, and head and neck cancer. These trials are mainly aimed at testing new cancer therapies, improving response rates, and understanding how treatments work in difficult-to-treat disease settings.

  • Evaluating novel treatment combinations for advanced solid tumors and blood cancers
  • Studying treatment effectiveness in acute myeloid leukemia and high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Exploring new immunotherapy strategies for lung cancer and head and neck cancer

This oncology portfolio shows active work on both early treatment response and longer-term disease control.

Cardiovascular and Stroke Prevention Studies

In cardiovascular diseases, the research includes coronary artery disease, heart failure, and prevention of ischemic stroke after recent cerebrovascular events. These trials are focused on improving diagnosis, reducing complications, and testing therapies that may lower the risk of major cardiovascular outcomes.

  • Evaluating new options for patients with heart failure with preserved or mildly reduced ejection fraction
  • Studying stroke prevention after transient ischemic attack or acute ischemic stroke
  • Assessing diagnostic tools for suspected coronary artery disease

The cardiovascular program combines treatment and diagnostic research to support earlier and more effective care.

Autoimmune and Inflammatory Disease Research

Clinical trials in immune system diseases at this institution cover giant cell arteritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, and ulcerative colitis. The site also conducts research in rare diseases, including ANCA-associated vasculitis, Sjögren’s syndrome, and hereditary angioedema. The main purpose is to compare new therapies with established treatments and to improve control of inflammation, symptoms, and disease activity.

  • Comparing treatments for giant cell arteritis to achieve sustained remission
  • Testing therapies for systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis
  • Studying new approaches for ulcerative colitis in patients with active disease

This research supports broader efforts to find safer and more effective long-term management strategies for autoimmune conditions.

Musculoskeletal, Neurologic, and Women’s Health Studies

The site’s trial portfolio also includes musculoskeletal diseases, nervous system diseases, and female urogenital diseases. Research in these areas addresses endometriosis-related pain, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions where better symptom relief, disease control, or treatment tolerance is needed.

  • Evaluating new options for endometriosis and pelvic pain relief
  • Studying treatment alternatives for multiple sclerosis
  • Exploring therapies that may improve quality of life in chronic inflammatory disorders

These studies broaden the research focus beyond major internal medicine specialties and into conditions that strongly affect daily functioning.

Nephrology and Kidney Disease Research

The site conducts clinical trials across a broad range of kidney diseases, from chronic kidney disease to end-stage kidney disease in patients on maintenance dialysis. A significant part of this work concerns glomerular diseases, including nephrotic syndrome, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and the rare Alport syndrome.

  • Evaluating therapies that reduce the risk of kidney function decline in chronic kidney disease
  • Studying reduction of proteinuria in FSGS, Alport syndrome, and other proteinuric kidney diseases
  • Comparing treatment regimens and preventing muscle loss in nephrotic syndrome
  • Assessing anti-inflammatory treatment in patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis

This is an important area for patients with chronic and rare kidney diseases, where access to new therapies may delay the need for renal replacement therapy.

Dermatology and Skin Disease Studies

In dermatology, the site carries out research in chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as moderate to severe atopic dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa. Projects also address rare conditions, including pyoderma gangrenosum and alopecia areata, as well as the treatment of skin toxicities associated with cancer therapy.

  • Evaluating new therapies, including biologics, in atopic dermatitis
  • Studying long-term treatment efficacy in hidradenitis suppurativa
  • Assessing treatment aimed at ulcer closure in pyoderma gangrenosum
  • Studying topical treatment of rash in patients receiving EGFR inhibitors

This research is particularly relevant for patients whose disease is not adequately controlled by standard treatment.

Ophthalmology and Eye Disease Research

The site’s research profile also includes ophthalmology. Studies cover pharmacological treatment of acquired blepharoptosis with eye drops, as well as projects at the interface of ophthalmology and oncology in uveal melanoma.

  • Evaluating efficacy and safety of eye drops in the treatment of acquired ptosis
  • Studying new therapies for uveal melanoma
  • Exploring less invasive treatment options in eye diseases

This area combines ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment with the multidisciplinary care available at the site.
